Blood Ceremony (2008)

When I discovered this band it was exactly what I had been looking for. The debut album from Toronto's Blood Ceremony hits hard with psychedelic doom ridden rock that reminds me of a mix between Witchcraft, Sleep and The Doors (maybe). It's sludgey and heavy enough to make me nod my head, but interesting enough to make me want to keep listening. The guitars are accompanied by flute and female vocals which give it this very tribal and sort of spiritual sound. These guys and gal are going on tour in Europe starting tomorrow with Electric Wizard. Keep on the look out for this band!

9 Shocks Terror - Paying Ohmage

This is, in my opinion, the best stuff from 9 Shocks Terror. This band is from Cleveland and has members of h100's and other Cleveland greats. Its not a hard find, but its a class that everyone should listen to. A lot.

Unwound "Fake Train" (1993)

download

Yeah, that's the cover.
Hopefully, more people will discover Unwound. This album is a bit more Fugazi-ish than previous releases, but it's still really good. Kinda math rocky i guess. Definitely one of the better and bigger bands as the emo subgenre was being originally defined. Too bad the pussies won that debate. Pussies.

Twothirtyeight - Regulate The Chemicals

'Regulate The Chemicals' came out in early 2002. Twothirtyeight decided call it quits little over a year after the release of this album. As far as the records that Tooth and Nail was pushing in the early goose eggs I say this is probably one of my favorites. Further Seems Forever was too gay, Acetroubleshooter wasn't good enough to be NOFX, but 'Regulate The Chemicals' is perfect. Perfect blend of emotional pop rock with apathetic lyrics.

Regulate the Chemicals was also reissued on Vinyl by a group called Recession Records. Buy it!

The Happy Hollows - Imaginary EP

The Happy Hollows - Imaginary EP

Good shit from a band that is somewhat unknown. Kind of quirky, but boy do I hate using that word. Girl fronted weird rock. Indie shit, but good.

Barrit - Smiles Upon The Stroke That Murders Me

Download

Let's face it, for the most part metalcore sucks. And maybe a couple years back I would have said all of it sucks, but i would have been forgetting bands like Barrit. Barrit would be considered metalcore I suppose, but it's pure greatness. Somehow this band captures a horror movie vibe without being retarded like a psychobilly band. "The Funeral" for instance starts of with a somber ambient panning female choir sample. There is also an unexpected track "barouke"[sic?] that is soft and classical influenced that strangely enhances the overall darkness of the album. To me it's pretty hard for a metalcore band to ever come off evil, but barrit succeeds at times. Definitely one of my favorite albums.

Touche Amore - To The Beat Of A Dead Horse

"...To The Beat Of A Dead Horse marks a real turning point in the life of the band. By focusing melodic and dissonant guitars on tracks like opener “And Now It’s Happening In Mine,” the band — made up of Tyson White, Clayton Stevens and Nick Steinhardt — craft perfect backdrops for singer Jeremy Bolm’s raw-throated stories of corrupt politicians (“History Reshits Itself”), exhausted nights (“Honest Sleep”) and existential loneliness (“Suckerfish”). Where TOUCHÉ AMORÉ’s demo 7” on No Sleep Records was full of promise, ...To The Beat Of A Dead Horse never feels fully realized: the guitars bend and weave but always maintain their drive, the rhythms are frequently off kilter but never off-time and the vocals are screamed at the edge of breaking up but they’re always exciting, pleasing even. This record was completed not compromised.

Featuring guest vocals by THURSDAY’s Geoff Rickly and MODERN LIFE IS WAR’s Jeff Eaton, ...To The Beat Of A Dead Horse was recorded by Alex Estrada at Earth Capital Studios and Mastered by Paul Miner (SUICIDE FILE, NEW FOUND GLORY, UNBROKEN)."

The Brats "The Brats 1980"

The Brats were one of the premier metal punk bands of northern Europe, but you certainly would never know it from the dearth of information on the internetz. Pre-Mercyful Fate members, thick accents, straight forward but aggressively catchy songs make this a forgotten classic! A few tracks appear on KBD ("The Fuel" on KBD #7) and Bloodstains across Denmark (anyone have that?) , but here are all of the best songs on one album. King Diamond sang in the last incarnation of The Brats.

Plus-Tech Squeeze Box

Plus-Tech Squeeze Box are an insane band from Japan whose sound is hard to define. It's basically a hyper active mix of rock and electronics carried out in a spazzy manner. That might sound like Polysics, but this is better. Unlike most crazy shit, it is not limited to a gimmick and there is obviously expert talent at work here even if it's disguised by arcade sounds. Shit rules, download both albums. Watch this video too.
